I’m Karthik Ravishankar, a seasoned backend engineer with over a decade of experience. Since 2018, I have been working at Amazon as a software engineer, where the role of a Software Development Engineer (SDE) encompasses responsibilities traditionally spread across multiple roles, including SRE, DevOps, System Engineer, Software Engineer, and QA Engineer. At Amazon, engineers are expected to fully own their projects end-to-end, which cultivates a robust skill set capable of handling complex tasks independently.
Automation and empowering software teams to deliver quickly have always been a passion of mine.
I was inspired by Jeff Lawsons book on “Ask Your Developer” in 2021 ( Nice listen on Audible btw) and saw first hand at Amazon how fast teams could move by cutting out need to communicate and had sense of ownership because they were responsible to deliver to end customer. Platform teams at Amazon simply built building blocks and got out of the way and never were the bottle neck.
